In recognition of National Diabetes Month, Delta Health System will host a community Lunch & Learn on Tuesday, November 17, 2026, at the Washington County Convention Center. The event will focus on the importance of diabetic foot care, early intervention, and preventing serious complications that can lead to limb loss.
The program, “Protecting the Diabetic Foot: Prevention, Early Intervention, and Limb Salvage,” will feature podiatrists Barbara Porchia, D.P.M. and Richard Cukelj, D.P.M., who will share valuable information about protecting foot health, recognizing warning signs, and understanding available treatment options.
Diabetes can affect circulation and damage nerves in the feet, sometimes making it difficult for individuals to recognize injuries, infections, or other developing problems. Without proper care, even a small wound can progress into a serious medical condition. Routine foot examinations, daily preventive care, and timely treatment are essential to reducing these risks.
“Diabetes affects so many individuals and families throughout the Mississippi Delta, and education is one of the most important tools we have to help prevent serious complications,” said Iris Stacker, Chief Executive Officer of Delta Health System. “Through programs like this Lunch & Learn, we want to provide our community with practical information, connect individuals with our physicians, and reinforce the importance of receiving preventive and specialty care close to home.”
During the program, Dr. Porchia and Dr. Cukelj will discuss common foot conditions associated with diabetes, including diabetic neuropathy, poor circulation, calluses, pressure injuries, and foot ulcers. They will also explain the importance of proper footwear, routine foot examinations, and recognizing changes that require medical attention.
“Many of the serious foot complications associated with diabetes can be prevented or better managed when problems are identified early,” said Dr. Barbara Porchia, Podiatrist. “Something as simple as checking your feet every day, wearing appropriate shoes, and scheduling regular foot examinations can make a tremendous difference. Our goal is to help patients understand what to look for and when to seek care.”
The discussion will also address more advanced diabetic foot conditions, including wound care, infection management, and surgical treatment when necessary. Participants will learn how early intervention and coordinated medical care can help preserve mobility, prevent complications, and reduce the risk of amputation.
“Foot health is an important part of overall diabetes management,” said Dr. Richard Cukelj, Podiatric Surgeon. “When patients develop wounds, infections, or changes in circulation, timely evaluation and treatment are critical. By working together with patients and other healthcare providers, we can identify problems earlier and pursue treatment options that help protect the foot and preserve the limb.”
The Lunch & Learn is designed for individuals living with diabetes or prediabetes, caregivers, those at increased risk for developing diabetes, and anyone interested in learning more about preventive foot care. A light, healthy lunch will be provided, and attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions following the physicians’ presentations.
According to Delta Health System, community education is an important part of its ongoing commitment to improving access to healthcare and helping residents take a more active role in their health.
“Our mission extends beyond treating illness,” Stacker added. “We want to help people stay healthy, recognize potential problems early, and understand the healthcare resources available to them. This program is another example of Delta Health System’s commitment to providing regional healthcare, close to home.”
The event is free and open to the community, reflecting Delta Health System’s commitment to making healthcare education and preventive care accessible to everyone. Residents throughout Washington County and the surrounding Mississippi Delta communities are encouraged to attend, enjoy a healthy lunch, meet our podiatrists, and learn simple steps they can take to protect their health and prevent serious diabetic complications.
