Residency Application and Selection Process

Resident candidates will undergo a formal procedure for application, evaluation, and selection. The minimal requirements for eligibility and selection are outlined below.

Application Initiation

Resident candidates may apply to the Program through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) in early June of the year preceding the anticipated Program year. Our Program will have access to the applications by September, and deadline for receipt of applications is December 31.

Interview Process

Applicants invited to interview for a residency position will be informed in writing or by email. Interviews will be conducted either in person or by selected video conferencing platform.

Eligibility Criteria

Graduation from medical school in the United States or Canada and accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) not greater than three years prior to commencing Program, or

Graduation from a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) not greater than three years prior to commencing Program, or

Graduation from a medical school outside of the United States or Canada meeting one of the following additional requirements:

  • Holds a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), or
  • Holds a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Mississippi.

Our Program does not sponsor J-1 Visas.

Applicants must have passing scores on Steps 1 and 2 (Clinical Knowledge and Clinical Skills) of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or an equivalent examination that qualifies for medical licensure (e.g., Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination-COMLEX).

Applicants must be eligible for either a residency permit or a permanent medical license as granted by the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure.

Applicants must provide three letters of recommendation with the author’s name phone number and address listed.

Applicants must be qualified to begin work by mid-June and possess a sincere interest in the respective specialty or subspecialty as a career.

Resident Selection Policy

Selection criteria for applicants are annually discussed and monitored by a subcommittee of the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC).

Selection is based on a thorough evaluation of the information provided in the ERAS application, interview day evaluations by faculty and residents, and other contact, both formal and informal.

The program selects eligible applicants based on their ability, educational preparedness, academic credentials, aptitude, and communications skills.

Mississippi Delta Family Medicine Residency Program does not discriminate with regard to sex, race, color, creed, religion, national origin, age, marital status, disability, veteran’s status or sexual orientation.

The program participates the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) and abides by the rules and regulations of the NRMP.

Residency Transfer Policy

In accordance with the ACGME’s Common Program Requirements, the program director must obtain the following prior to accepting a trainee from another residency:

  • Written or electronic verification of previous educational experiences and a summative competency-based performance evaluation of the transferring resident.
  • Proof that the transferring resident has passed the USMLE Step 3 or equivalent licensing examination (e.g. COMLEX) for PGY-3 residents.
  • A program director must provide timely verification of residency education and summative performance evaluations for residents and fellows who leave the program prior to completion.
