Gynecological Surgery in Greenville and Washington County

Women’s Health Procedures

If your gynecologist has recommended you undergo a gynecological surgery, then you will be at good hands with the skilled surgeons at The Medical Center. In many cases, the procedures patients need are minimally invasive, meaning only a few small incisions are needed to perform the operation. Minimally invasive surgeries are safer than traditional open surgeries and allow patients to recover from the procedure faster.

The following are some common gynecological surgeries:

  • Cervical Ablation – Endometrial ablation is a procedure that surgically destroys (ablates) the lining of your uterus (endometrium). The goal of endometrial ablation is to reduce menstrual flow. In some women, menstrual flow may stop completely
  • Cervical Biopsy (LEEP Cone) Conization (cone biopsy) and LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure) are treatments that identify and remove abnormal tissue from the cervix in cases of cervical dysplasia
  • Dilation and Curettage (D&C) –The goal of this procedure is to remove the lining of the uterine wall using a suction or cutting tool. The sample of wall obtained can be tested for signs of cancer and other problems
  • Hysteroscopy - Another diagnostic procedure where the gynecologist observes the insides of the uterus using a long, tube-shaped camera called a laparoscope. The laparoscope can also obtain tissue samples
  • Hysterectomy – Some women can benefit from having the uterus removed if they have high-risk for cancer and other medical conditions. Hysterectomies can be performed minimally invasively with a laparoscope
  • Myomectomy – This procedure is performed to remove fibroid growths from the uterus to prevent them from causing pain or becoming cancerous. Small tools will be used to remove the fibroid minimally invasively
  • Ovarian Cystectomy – Though many cysts do not cause any problems, some can produce painful symptoms and need to be removed. Ovarian cystectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that removes cysts from the ovaries
  • Tubal Ligation— also known as having your tubes tied or tubal sterilization — is a type of permanent birth control
